This web page is devoted to the project CARMEN (Campania Region Meteorological Radar Network), developed by CCMMMA in cooperation with Società Autostrade SpA. The main aim of this project consists in the implementation and operational use of a weather radar network in Campania Region. The radar network is constituted by two single-polarization X-band systems, named WR-10X and manufactured by ELDES s.r.l.: one is operating in Naples Castel Sant’Elmo (40.843812°N, 14.238565°E; 280 m asl) and is managed by CCMMMA, whereas the other one is located in Trevico (41.052157°N, 15.235667°E; 1050 m asl) and is owned by Società Autostrade SpA. The maximum coverage range is 108 km for both radar. Additional and detailed technical information about the WR-10X radar system can be accessed through the following link: http://meteo.uniparthenope.it/instruments .
The two-dimensional reflectivity composite of the two radar, presented in terms of Vertical Maximum Intensity (VMI), is shown below. The composite domain includes almost all Campania Region, a great part of Molise, the northern sector of Apulia (provinces of Foggia and Barletta-Trani), the southern sector of Lazio region and a part of Lucania (the province of Potenza). The reflectivity composite has been developed by CCMMMA, after a careful quality control of radar measurements, and is updated every ten minutes.
Acknowledgments: the CCMMMA of the University of Naples “Parthenope” is grateful to the “Soprintendenza Speciale per il Patrimonio Storico Artistico ed Etnoantropologico e per il Polo Museale della città di Napoli” for hosting the WR-10X weather radar at Castel Sant’Elmo. ELDES srl (Florence, Italy) personnel is acknowledged for the technical support. Società Autostrade SpA is also gratefully acknowledged for the fruitful partnership.
